KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) - A former military man, Joe Woolum, 90, kept a morning routine at his Keller assisted care residence. He would get up bright and early and head for coffee. But Wednesday, Woolum didn't show up for his morning cup.
"He didn't get up and have coffee," said Keller Police Captain Brenda Slovak. "So the worker went to check on him and that's when she found the male and female in the bed with gunshot wounds."
Joe and his wife Georgianne Woolum were dead. A family member said they were holding hands.
"This is disturbing and unfortunate because it is an elderly couple," Slovak said.
Joe Woolen was a former marine who was awarded a Purple Heart in World War 2. A house painter by trade, he painted artwork while in retirement.
The Woolum's daughter says Georgianne had suffered two strokes, congestive heart failure and had most of her colon removed -- she needed constant care.
She said her mother had grown tired of suffering but both parents refused to move in with family and be a burden.
Tuesday night, Joe Woolum had a high fever; his family thinks he was afraid he would get sick and not be able to care for his wife.
Dana Lenihan, his daughter, said, "I don't want people to think they were unloved or he was cruel. He loved her more than anything and they loved each other. I think he thought he wasn't going to be able to take care of her."
