The collision, which occurred around 1 p.m., resulted in the closure of I-45 between Loop 12 and Simpson Stuart Road. The highway reopened after 9 p.m.

A vehicle traveling north on I-45 collided with another vehicle. The first vehicle crossed the median, entered southbound traffic, hit two vehicles, then crashed into the guardrail and flipped, police said.

Three people in the initial vehicle died at the scene, while a driver in one of the southbound vehicles died at the hospital, police said. The condition of a second southbound driver, who also went to the hospital, wasn't immediately known.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
