3 Austin Area Police Officers Shot, Suspect Barricaded In Home

CEDAR PARK, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Three police officers in the Austin area were shot Sunday and the suspect remains barricaded in a home, police said.

Police in Cedar Park, about 20 miles north of Austin, said officers were responding to a call Sunday afternoon regarding a person who kicked in the door at his mother's home and started acting aggressively.

During a news conference Sunday evening, Cedar Park interim Police Chief Mike Harmon said the man fired at officers when they entered the home. Three officers were shot and taken to the hospital, where they remained stable.

The interim chief said officers returned fire but it's unknown if anyone else was hit.

Harmon said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home with his mother, a child and another family member. He remained barricaded during the news conference at around 8:45 p.m.

According to police, one officer will remain in the hospital through the evening.

Residents in the area of Natalie Cove are being asked to stay indoors as the scene remains active.

Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement on the situation in Cedar Park.

"Our hearts are with the police officers who were injured while protecting the Cedar Park community this afternoon. We must never take for granted the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, and the State of Texas stands ready to provide the support and resources needed to bring justice to those involved. I ask that all Texans join Cecilia and me in prayer for the these officers, and for the safety of all law enforcement officers across the state."
