Ms. Davis Goes To Washington For Campaign Fundraising
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - There are more signs Fort Worth Senator Wendy Davis has her eye on 'relocating' to the Texas capitol.
Thus far Senator Davis has only been successful raising fundraising dollars with small donations. But since her 11+-hour filibuster attempt in the Texas legislature, Davis has seen a spike in her fundraising dollars. Just last week her campaign announced there was some $1.06 million cash-on-hand.
Unlike regional races, running for a statewide office requires a huge amount of cash. This could very well be the reason why Davis is holding a number of fundraising events in the nation's capitol this week.
Southern Methodist University political analyst Cal Jillson said other Texas politicians have had success seeking financial backing on a national level. "Ted Cruz, in 2012, was lagging in Texas fundraising until the big national money came in [and] got him into a runoff," Jillson said. "You'd have to be a fool not to take advantage of out-of-state money."
Davis gained national attention during her June filibuster attempt to stop the passage of a bill enacting abortion facility requirements and restrictions that most believe will shutter the doors of almost every abortion clinic in Texas. Davis' filibuster attempt, during the first Legislative Special Session, was successful because of chanting crowds in the gallery.
Davis held her own for more than 11 hours before Republicans cited rules violations and brought her marathon speaking session to an end, but chanting crowds in the gallery cried out in opposition. Noise from the crowd was so loud senators couldn't hear instructions for the vote and the bill died because time requirements weren't met. Almost immediately, Governor Rick Perry called a second Special Session and the bill was passed.
This week Davis will hold a breakfast fundraiser at a Capitol Hill eatery. The suggested contribution for the morning event is $500. Those with a more limited budget may want to attend a second 'happy hour' event, where tickets range from 25 to $250.
While Davis has said her main focus is on her senate re-election next year, she has said she will soon make an announcement about her future political plans.
