Motorcycle Rally Rides To Support Injured Soldier
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - More than 1,000 motorcycles lined up from Dallas to Lewisville over the weekend to support a young Army sergeant fighting to make a miraculous recovery. With their flags flying and police in the lead, Miles For Mills was one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the region this year.
The motorcycle riders were on two wheels, for a soldier who lost two legs and two arms. Travis Mills is learning to walk again at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His family said that he is one of just four quadruple amputees to survive the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 25-year-old was hurt in April, during his third tour.
"Three tours and for what happened to him, this ain't enough," said rider Mike Hallen. "HIm and all the other vets need more."
Riders hope that their participation will help. Donations made from the rally go to the Mills family -- his wife and daughter. "They need to know that we're behind them," said rider April Crocker, "because that's what gives them their drive, and to know that Americans support them 100 percent."
There is already talk of making Miles For Mills an annual event.
While he could not be there in person, Mills made sure that riders knew how he felt. "It helps me every day, to keep pushing to get better," Mills told the crowd over the phone, "and I will be there next year for this event."
