DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – One of the seven officers injured in Thursday's ambush downtown was a 23-year-old rookie named Gretchen Rocha.

She was hit by shrapnel.

"They couldn't get paramedics in there, because of all of the chaos and they thought it would be safer just to put them in the squads and get to the hospital," described Rocha's mother, Diane Baker.

Baker said another officer who was shot was in the car with her daughter on the way to the hospital.

"And she was driving and I guess he died right with her on the way," said Baker.

Rocha is physically alright, according to her mother but the emotional trauma of losing her fellow officers has proven difficult.

Yet Baker was quick to point out how tough her daughter is and said nothing will stop Rocha from returning to police work.

Three DART officers injured the ambush, Misty McBride, Elmar Cannon and Jesus Retana are expected to recover from their gun shot wounds.
