North Texas Mom Killed In Wrong-Way Collision
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Maria Vasquez had just dropped off her nearly 2-year-old son with her father and headed to work. The 33-year-old did not make it far. The Dallas County Sheriff's office said, around 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, 21-year-old Santiago Morin-Gonzalez drove a white Ford F-150 the wrong way down northbound Interstate-35E and crashed into oncoming traffic.
Vasquez was in a car, caught between two others in the wreckage.
Rescue crews were able to free her, but Vasquez's parents said that, by the time they reached Parkland Memorial Hospital, she had died.
"They're taking it very hard. It's a loss, when you lose your own blood, your own daughter," said neighbor David Rivera.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Morin-Gonzalez and charged him with intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault. His brother, Abelardo Morin, said that Morin-Gonzalez seemed fine when he stopped by at 6:00 a.m. to talk. When Morin noticed that Morin-Gonzalez had a flat tire, he lent him his own truck, the same one later involved in the crash. Family members have not been able to talk to him since, but saw the tragedy on television.
"It is difficult," said Morin, "and we don't what we're going to do."
Two other drivers were also caught up in the crash. Deputies said that they did not appear to be seriously injured.
