More Texans Hitting The Road Today For July 4th Travel

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Today will be the busiest travel day for the July 4th holiday period.

Nearly three million Texans are expected to travel this holiday week, with some 2.4 million of them traveling by car or truck. "You can expect the roadways will be packed starting on Wednesday," AAA spokesman Doug Shupe explained. "We really encourage folks to be extremely cautious behind the wheel."

The number of folks heading to in-town and out-of-town vacations is actually lower than last year, but the 2012 Independence Day holiday was loner because July 4th fell on a Wednesday.

Even though there may be fewer drivers on the road, Shupe's advice for travelers is the same. "Please don't be distracted by those cell phones. Make sure that you're number one focus, while you're traveling to your 4th of July destination, is on the road ahead of you."

Shupe says most Texans will drive at least 50 miles from home over the long holiday weekend, with the average round-trip vacation being about 966 miles.
