Moore Teachers Honored At Texas IndyCar Race
FORT WORTH (AP) - Two teachers from an Oklahoma school demolished by a tornado will be co-grand marshals at the IndyCar Series race Saturday night in Texas.
Jennifer Simonds and Anna Canaday were in Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Okla., on May 20 when the school took a direct hit. The educators, who'll be recognized at the race in Fort Worth, used their bodies to shield kindergarten students.
More tornadoes hit Oklahoma last week and Canaday's home and vehicles were destroyed.
The honorary race starter waving the green flag will be C.J. Gillaspie, a captain of the West Volunteer Fire Department among the first responders during the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion. The fiery blast claimed 15 lives and left about 200 people hurt in West, about 70 miles south of Fort Worth.
