Mom & Teen Son Hurt In DeSoto Shooting
DESOTO (CBSDFW.COM) - A mother and her teenage son were shot on Wednesday night after a domestic dispute turned violent in DeSoto. The incident happened around 9:00 p.m. outside of a home in the 500 block of Meadow Hill Drive.
Capt. Ron Smith of the DeSoto Police Department said that it began when officers responded to call about shots fired. "It's a family violence situation gone bad again," Smith said, referring to a domestic shooting in April that left two adults dead and two children wounded.
When police officers arrived at the scene, Smith said, they found the woman's ex-husband kneeling in a surrender position. Smith said that the man shot at his ex-wife and her two children -- ages 11 and 15 -- as they fled from her mother's home in a vehicle. "He remained at the scene," Smith said. "He is in custody at this time."
Emory Howell is the owner of the home where the shooting took place. She said that the family was pulling into the home after a game and the automatic garage door was closing. But the suspect was hiding outside, and rolled under the door before it shut. He popped up on the passenger side, where the teenager was sitting and, Howell said, started firing.
"He shot all the way around the car," Howell said. "And when he got to her, he put the gun literally to the window to shoot at her head, five times. And missed. At close range."
"He dove, jumped on the hood of the car, started beating the windshield with the butt of the gun, trying to get in," Howell continued. "When she backed out, she swung him off."
The ex-wife was grazed by a bullet during the attack. She managed to escape to a nearby Walgreens store and called police from there. The youngest child was not hurt. Howell was not in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
The older child, identified as 15-year-old Corey Dooley, was shot multiple times and taken to Methodist Central Hospital in critical condition. He is a star athlete at South Grand Prairie High School. Family members are asking that everyone keep him in their prayers.
Police identified the suspect as 46-year-old Richard Richard. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and endangering a child. Howell identified the mother as Nicole Dooley and the children as 11-year-old Cody Dooley and Corey. The couple had been separated since August, Howell said. They were married in November 2008.
According to Howell, the suspect had been stalking her daughter for months. "Ever since she left," Howell said. "The judge ordered no more communication, and this man was still contacting her."
Dooley had gone to police in both DeSoto and Grand Prairie seeking protection from her ex-husband, explained Howell, but she needed to have a protective order, which had not yet been signed by a judge. "The system failed us," Howell said. "We were trying to do everything by the courts, decent and order. You don't just take the law into your own hands."
Howell added, "It's taking people dying in order for the system to work."
