MLB To Interview Players In Miami PED Report
NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) - In the wake of Tuesday's report linking Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz, Gio Gonzalez and other star players to performance-enhancing drugs, MLB plans to interview each player, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
The league hopes to first obtain the documents tying the players to the South Florida clinic that has served as the epicenter of baseball's latest PED scandal. Passan says league officials will travel to Florida in the coming days to meet with Miami New Times representatives to see if the publication will provide access to the documents used in the report.
"We will most certainly take that request very seriously," said Miami New Times editor-in-chief Chuck Strouse. "We're in the business of reporting news. And we're also in the business of justice. I don't know what we would do if they asked. We're talking with our lawyers, and we don't want to stand in the way of any investigation. We'll have to determine it when it comes to that."
If the Miami New Times does release the records to MLB, it would improve the league's case when it comes time to argue for potential 50-game suspensions. It would also provide a window into Anthony Bosch, the alleged PED supplier and chief of Biogenesis, the clinic in question. Strouse indicated they have more names but did not release them because the evidence is weak.
A-Rod, Cruz and Gonzalez are the major players involved in a scandal that also includes athletes from other sports. Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and Yasmani Grandal were all connected to Biogenesis as well, and all three were suspended within the last calendar year. Both Rodriguez and Gonzalez have denied the allegations.
