Mistrial Declared Over Deadly Carrollton Fire
DENTON (AP) - A jury has deadlocked in the case of a North Texas woman charged with starting a 2010 house fire that killed her boyfriend's 2-year-old son.
A judge in Denton on Monday declared a mistrial in the trial of Toni Barnett of Frisco. Barnett was charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and arson over the August 2010 blaze in Carrollton that claimed the life of Braylen Smalls.
Investigators say Barnett and the boy's father, Christian Smalls, argued prior to the fire.
Prosecutors say Barnett felt disrespected and she set the blaze.
Barnett testified that her boyfriend started the fire after she threatened to leave him.
Attorneys for both sides are expected to meet later this month to consider a retrial date.
