Missing Luggage: Lost Or Stolen?

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Thinking that it was lost by the airlines, the DFW International Airport Police Department stated that many cases of stolen luggage are never even reported.

"Let us know what happens," said Assistant Chief Lonnie Freeman. "The traveling passenger, they don't know whether or not it missed a connection that they were on, or if someone actually stole the luggage."

Freeman explained that luggage theft is a crime of opportunity. And on this holiday weekend, he said, if travelers are not mindful, there will be plenty of opportunities available for those thieves.

Travelers on Wednesday waited anxiously for their luggage in the baggage claim areas at DFW International Airport. "More times than not, they lose my luggage," said Amy Schrick, who flew in from Grand Junction, Colorado.

Mark Clee flew into DFW from Cincinnati on Wednesday and waited nearly an hour after he landed for his checked bag to roll of of the conveyor belt. "I have this fear whenever I wait for my bag," he said, "like it's not going to come." American Airlines did eventually find Clee's bag -- it was lost, not stolen.

Airport police said, if your checked luggage goes missing, first check with the airline. Then, if the airline is not able to track down your bag, find one of the police officers at the airport and make a report.
