Miller Wins Texas Education Board Seat

DALLAS (AP) - Former Texas State Board of Education member Geraldine "Tincy" Miller has defeated Gail Spurlock for the Republican nomination for District 12.

Miller will now face Democrat Lois Parrott in the November general election for the district that includes North Texas' Collin County and part of Dallas County.

Miller, ousted in the primary two years ago following 26 years on the board, is vice chairman of a Dallas commercial real estate company.

Spurlock had said she would have voted "the vast majority of the time" with the board's social conservative bloc. Miller has said she'll vote her "conscience" and "conservative beliefs."

Following redistricting, all 15 spots are up for re-election on the board that establishes the state's public school curriculum, approves textbooks and manages the state's permanent school fund.
