FORT WORTH (CBS11) – Military aircraft are making their way to Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base.
They are coming from the east coast of Florida and the Carolina's seeking a safe haven from the wrath of Hurricane Matthew.
U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Aiden Carrigg is one of the dozens of pilots already in Fort Worth from Jacksonville.
He and his crew flew about a dozen P-8 airplanes into the JRB.
"We've got to get these aircraft out of harms way," said Carrigg. "There's not enough hanger space for them back home."
About another dozen F-16's from Homestead Air Force Base in Florida are also at the JRB.
Chief Master Sergeant Stacy Walker led the mission to bring them here.
"I am absolutely glad they are here," said Walker. "It's a multi-million dollar aircraft. I'd rather spend a couple dollars in gas than replace an airplane."
The crews say while Hurricane Matthew continues to churn off of the east coast, they will ride out the storm here in North Texas.
More planes are expected to arrive on Friday.
