DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Independent School District has officially hired educator Mike Miles to head the state's second largest district.

Miles, who comes to Dallas from the Harrison school district in Colorado Springs, Colorado, signed a 3-year contract with DISD following a 2-hour meeting with Dallas school board members.

The board voted 8-1 to approve Miles' contract.  Board trustee Carla Ranger had some concerns on the hire, and was the lone 'no' vote.  The process was expected to be a formality.

Miles will be paid $300,000 a year with performance-based incentives built in year to year.

Miles replaces Michael Hinojosa, who left Texas to take a position in a suburban Atlanta school district.

Miles' official start date is July 1. But starting Friday, he will work as a consultant for the district for $1,000 a day, but for no more than 15 days
