Midland Parade Crash Victim To Be Laid To Rest
GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - More than two weeks after a horrific crash in west Texas left four veterans dead, one of the victims will be laid to rest. Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers was one of the four veterans killed in a Veterans Day parade in Midland. He will be honored Wednesday at DFW International Airport when his body arrives in North Texas.
The Patriot Guard will be on hand at the airport. Lubbers was a Special Forces soldier in the Army for 24 years and was awarded three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. His body will be flown to Arlington National Cemetery to be buried later this week.
Lubbers was wounded during one of four tours in Afghanistan. But he and four other veterans were killed during a Veterans Day parade, when their parade float was struck by a train. Lubbers and several others were riding on a trailer in the parade when the float driver traveled through a railroad crossing. The trailer was struck by an oncoming train, leaving four veterans dead and 16 people hurt.
Federal investigators left Midland on Tuesday. The National Transportation Safety Board announced that warning signals were functioning on that day. However, two weeks after the crash, the driver of the parade truck has not been interviewed. The driver's attorney told investigators that he is not yet ready to talk.
The NTSB investigation continues. The agency plans to release a preliminary report on its findings in about 10 days.
