Michigan Fire Department To Donate Fire Truck To Abbott, Texas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A gift from a small town in Michigan will help replace a fire truck lost in the devastating fertilizer plant explosion in the town of West.
Les than seven miles north of West sits the neighboring town of Abbott. In addition to losing one of their fire trucks in the blast, two Abbott volunteers were also killed in the explosion.
Ada, Michigan, may be 1200 miles from Abbott, but firefighters say they are all united in loss.
The Ada Fire Department could have sold their 20-year-old pumper for a profit, but firefighters and township officials decided they could donate it to Abbott instead.
The ball got rolling and donations from businesses and t-shirt sales helped not only refurbish the truck, but to also replace firefighting equipment so necessary to beat down blazes.
It's a labor of love for all involved. "Once this took off we just kept getting calls for different services and stuff," . We had a call last week that a company in Grand Rapids would strip all of our decals off and then re-label it with the Abbott stuff."
"Once this took off we just kept getting calls for different services and stuff," recalled Ada Township Fire-Rescue Department Lieutenant Dave Murray. "We had a call last week that a company in Grand Rapids would strip all of our decals off and then re-label it with the Abbott stuff."
Four firefighters drove the fire engine from Michigan to Texas using money generated from summer fundraisers for food and gas.
The firefighters will deliver the fire engine to the folks in Abbott on Saturday morning.
