Michael Irvin: Cowboys Making 'Poor Decision' With Murray

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin is often accused of being too supportive of the Dallas Cowboys. That's not the case today.

Irvin joined 105.3 The Fan's G-Bag Nation to react to news that star running back DeMarco Murray could be leaving for Philadelphia.

"I think this is poor decision-making on the Cowboys' part -- on many different levels," said Irvin.

Irvin says he understands that Dallas is trying to be fiscally responsible in filling the running back position. However, he thinks the ramifications of not signing Murray go beyond losing the production.

"I don't care if you pay him a little more than you wanted to. I think that's not a bad thing; that's a good thing because it send a better message to the locker room," said Irvin. "You perform; you will get taken care of. I'm a little worried about the residual of this message that they're sending."

That message is already being felt by one star player. Irvin says he has already fielded text messages from Dez Bryant, who has yet to sign a long-term deal in Dallas.

"When you treat the leading rusher like this, you can't help it but go in with your own individual goals because you see the team ain't doing what their supposed to be doing," said Irvin.

While other elite backs -- like Adrian Peterson -- could be available, Irvin says he'd rather bet on a known commodity who has proven to be a great fit in Dallas.

"How do I know that Adrian Peterson and Dez Bryant are going to get along? How do I know these things. I don't."

The league's leading rusher carried a heavy load in 2014, rushing 392 times for 1,845 yards. Statistics suggest that players regress in subsequent seasons after carrying such a load.

Irvin is interested in statistics.

"I've watched a lot of experts say what Emmitt couldn't do, and I don't buy into that...I'm not buying that."

And while it might be too late to salvage Murray in Dallas, Irvin is hoping that Jerry will ignore those around him and take it upon himself to make a drastic move.

"I hope Jerry allows all of this to go down so he can jump in at the last moment and come out of that phone booth like Superman."

Keeping DeMarco -- Irvin believes that could be the key to building something special in Dallas. He also believes it's something the team deserves.

"You were one bad call away from going to the Super Bowl on a Dez Bryant catch," said Irvin. "There's no way I'm not giving that team another opportunity to get to that Super Bowl."
