Mesquite Standoff Ends, Area H.S. Still On Lockdown

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - A breaking news situation happening in Mesquite has ended.
Mesquite High School was placed on lockdown because an armed man was directly across the street from the campus.
The man had been making threats against himself since about 2:00 p.m. Video from Chopper 11 showed him pacing back and forth in front of a business. The man had what appeared to be a gun and frequently put it to his head.
Officers and negotiators with the Mesquite Police Department had continual communication with the man. Mesquite police Lt. Bill Hedgepeth said, "He was threatening suicide with a handgun. Officers responded to the area and contained him in the parking lot."
In addition to Mesquite High, nearby Agnew Middle School and Florence Black Elementary School were also on high alert. As it came tie for classes to dismiss from Agnew and Black students who travel by school bus were allowed to leave. Those youngsters who walk to and from school had to wait for their parents to pick them up or stay on campus until the incident ended.
While Mesquite High generally dismissed at 3:45 p.m., the campus remained on lockdown until officers took the man into custody.

From Chopper 11 video it appeared that the man surrendered to authorities without incident.
