Memorials Set For Dallas Officers Killed In Ambush

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - As the investigation into the police ambush in downtown Dallas continues on Monday, so does the outpouring of support for Dallas police officers. Condolences are coming in from all parts of the country, and a number of dignitaries are arriving in North Texas this week to pay their respects.
Two patrol cars parked outside of the Dallas Police Department's headquarters have become the gathering place for those who wish to show their support. Folks from across the area stopped by the memorial throughout the weekend to remember the five officers who were killed during the Thursday night attack, and thank police for their service.
The patrol cars have since been covered with flowers, cards, balloons, inspirational notes and candles. After burning for hours, some of those candles have dimmed. But the show of support for Dallas has not flickered.
Sen. Aaron Ford of Nevada is a Dallas native who paid his respects to the slain officers on Monday morning, joining thousands of people who have already visited the memorial. He said that he was heartbroken when he heard about the news. "The notion that someone takes the wrong hit -- an eye for an eye approach to vindicate other issues -- was frightening, heartbreaking and, at the same time, brought tears to my eyes," Ford said.
The Nevada official presented a proclamation signed by the state's governor that said, in part, "Nevadans will never forget the sacrifices made by the first responders and members of the community who assisted the victims of this tragedy."
Others will take part in a candlelight vigil on Monday night. It is scheduled from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Dallas City Hall.
President Barack Obama will visit Dallas on Tuesday to attend a memorial service for the fallen officers and to meet with their families, as well as those who were injured during the ambush. The President was supposed to be in Europe this week, but cut that trip short in order to be in Dallas.
Several additional services are planned for the five slain police officers throughout this week.
