Medical Examiner Rules Chase Suspect Died From Self-Inflicted Gunshot
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Garland and Dallas opened fire Friday afternoon on a man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend that morning at a QuikTrip gas station.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner says the suspect, Dallas resident Domingo Soto, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Soto, 42, was a passenger in a truck that police pulled over at HWY 175 and Buckner Blvd. When approached by police, Soto resisted before reaching into his waistband for a gun.
"The officers believed he was armed they retreated and they fired their service weapons believing he was about to shoot them," said DPD Major Jeff Cotner.
Soto was shot by officers but still managed to drive off in the truck, later hitting a median and coming to a stop.
He then shot himself in the head. Despite the gunshot wounds he suffered from officers, it was the self-inflicted shot to the head that killed him, according to the medical examiner.
His ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, William Chapman, died Friday night at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
