McKinney Repeat Rapist Gets Life Sentence
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - A registered sex offender living in McKinney was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for a July 2011 rape, announced Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis today.
Jason Latroy Leonard, 35, brutally beat and sexually assaulted his victim at her McKinney home when the victim's husband was out of town.
Proof of the incident was recovered on Leonard's cell phone, which he used to record his victim in the shower and for portions of the rape.
Leonard had met his victim just two days prior and returned to the home offering to help out with things around the house. After a few hours of help, Leonard changed the conversation to sex, which prompted the victim to insist he leave.
Leonard refused to leave and became violent, punching the victim in the face, knocking her to the ground, and dragging her by her hair to the kitchen where he sexually assaulted her three times at knifepoint.
Leonard threatened to hurt the victim's children, who were asleep in the house at the time, if she ever told anyone. The victim called a friend and went to the hospital to receive treatment.
McKinney police began their investigation at the hospital, where the victim gave a detailed description of the suspect and picked Leonard out of a photo line-up.
She also reported that Leonard had used his cell phone during the assault.
McKinney police secured an arrest warrant the next day and arrested Leonard and recovered his cell phone with the help of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. The United States Secret Service performed a forensic examination of the phone and recovered the deleted videos.
During the punishment phase of the trial, the jury was told of Leonard's previous rape conviction, his December 2009 release from prison, and that Leonard was living in McKinney as a registered sex offender.
