McKinney Burglary Spike Worries Residents
McKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - A recent crime spree in McKinney couldn't have come at a worse time for homeowners and businesses.
The city has had more than 100 burglaries since October 1.
Kris Oliveri was one of the first victims of the crime wave.
"It's horrible," she said, "because we are looking out for each other (in our neighborhood) but nobody wants to venture out."
Oliveri's daughter Brittney confronted a burglar inside their home on October 1. "My first instinct was to run away," she said, "because I didn't know if they had a gun or what they could do."
Just down the street, Celina Chacon had more than $5000 worth of televisions and other electronics stolen during a daytime break-in a few days ago.
"The worst part about it is they took a lot of my personal items," Chacon said. "They took a lot of my pictures and my computer."
The family has insurance that could help replace the stolen property, but the deductible alone is a steep $2000.
The burglary spike also extends to dozens of businesses.
McKinney Police say there have been 119 burglaries since October 1. By comparison, the City of Plano -- which is twice the size of McKinney -- had 128 during the same time period.
And despite the sudden increase, McKinney Police say residential burglaries are up just two percent since July.
Police say they have no reason at this point to believe the burglaries are connected.
