Mayor: Companies Interested In AA Maintenance Facility Space
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price says don't expect overgrown grass and empty lots at the site of the American Airlines maintenance base at Alliance Airport. The city has already heard from several companies interested in moving into the space.
The maintenance facility is being shut down as part of AA's bankruptcy reorganization. When the location closes in December more than 1,000 jobs will be eliminated.
Mayor Price said the city isn't looking to have just anyone fill the space.
"We want companies that are gonna provide good jobs, just like American has," she said. "Our heart goes out to the American employees who are losing those jobs, but we're hoping that we can get a company back in."
Mayor Price wouldn't name any names but said several potential tenants have inquired about the space.
"Its not at the point where we can so 'who'. There are several companies interested in it and I believe we'll be alright."
The plan is for American to shut down four maintenance lines at the Alliance base in November and begin layoffs the following month. The airline will have vacated the base completely by April of 2013.
Price believes the layout of the facility makes it attractive to tenants who could quickly make the space their own.
"It's a very state-of-the-art facility and that appeals to a lot of people, a lot of companies," she said. "The aviation industry continues to be strong in Tarrant County and we believe there'll be other companies that might just fit that bill."
The work done by American at Alliance will be outsourced or shifted to facilities at DFW Airport and in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
