Mayor, City Hall Support Chief Brown In Shooting Investigation
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - In the wake of Tuesday's shooting, Dallas City Hall, from the Mayor to the manager, to City Council members, all are expressing faith that Dallas Police Chief David Brown will get to the bottom of precisely what occurred.
"I'm sure, I'm confident Chief Brown will do the right thing in investigating this issue," said Council member Carolyn Davis.
She and colleague Dwaine Caraway made the rounds at their districts to urge calm. "Let's pause for a moment. Let's get all the facts," said Davis, "find out what happened, and then, if that officer was wrong...if he was wrong, then I know Chief Brown will deal with it."
Caraway echoed her concern. "We're still at the point of letting the investigation move forward," he said.
While the shooting occurred in Davis' district, both she and Caraway tell constituents the same message. "The community is upset," Caraway told CBS 11 News, "the family of course is upset, but there is an investigation that Chief Brown has to continue." Davis added, "I think it's really important to get all the facts, because right now we're dealing with emotion. We're dealing with anger and we're dealing with emotion."
Though out of town, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings released a statement:
"My confidence in the Dallas Police Department and Chief Brown has never been higher. Crime has never been lower and we are on our ninth year of crime reduction. We were tested last night and Chief Brown is thoroughly investigating the incident to ensure no civil rights were violated. As this case is examined let me be clear, Dallas has a zero tolerance for civil rights violations as well as a zero tolerance for bad people dealing drugs."
In Rawlings' absence, Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano is acting mayor. "I'm confident; we have to make sure that we are doing everything we should be doing," she told CBS 11 News.
Medrano also chairs the council committee that monitors the police department. "Our heart definitely goes out to the Harper family but we've got to make sure we've got all that information first."
Information, says Medrano, though hard to come by early now, will eventually come out. All eyes will then be on Chief Brown to see what action will be taken.
