Cuban Contacts Retiring Kidd
DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) – Mark Cuban's public stance on Jason Kidd's retirement? Silence. His private stance?
"Cube reached out and sent me a nice note," Kidd tells 105.3 The Fan. "Cube is one of, if not the, best owner in sports. We were lucky to be with him when we won that championship."
Cuban refused on-the-record comment when we asked about Kidd's announcement that he is retiring after 19 seasons that will eventually lead to his Hall-of-Fame induction. And the Dallas Mavericks didn't so much as send out a press release acknowledging the greatness of a pivotal player in the team's 2011 NBA title.
But Kidd's revelation to the "GBag Nation" show could be significant in a future connection between the organization and the player, who would like to eventually have his jersey retired and also aspires to a career in an NBA front office.
Cuban was upset that Kidd broke an apparent promise last summer by leaving Dallas as a free agent to sign with the Knicks, saying, "as of now, I wouldn't put J-Kidd's number in the rafters."
Said Kidd on Tuesday when asked if he's like to be remembered as a No. 5 or a No. 2 (his jersey numbers during two stints with the Mavs), he said, "Oh, whatever number (Cuban) would like to put up, I'll be there. … just as long as my number went up, that would be just the best honor and the highlight of my career."
Kidd also said he would soon talk to Cuban about his employment and business future.
"For sure,'' said Kidd, who has often spoken openly to DallasBasketball.com about his desire to work on the GM level in Dallas. "I will definitely reach out to Cube here in the near future for advice going forward."
