Maternity Photography A New Texas Trend
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - For a decade photographer Teresa Berg has captured life's little miracles. But more and more often, the classically trained photographer is preserving their likeness before they've even taken their first breath.
"I don't know a woman who's pregnant who doesn't feel she's going thru a miracle," said a beaming Teresa Berg, from her bright and airy North Dallas studio.
To savor their changing shapes, women are turning to maternity photography--one of the hottest trends for moms-to-be.
"It's an absolute miracle," said 29-year-old Haley Delargarza of Hurst, who counted on Berg to capture her pregnancy in print. "To be able to remember this experience, because it's not something that happens that frequently to most people, and it doesn't happen for some at all. So it's something I can look back and remember exactly how I felt that day, and exactly how he felt inside of me."
An ICU nurse at Fort Worth's John Peter Smith Hospital, Haley said she was not fond, at first, of showing off her blossoming body. But after professional hair, makeup, and a "maternitini" or two inside the comfort of Berg's studio, Haley said the photo session transformed her.
"I actually thought I would be more uncomfortable than it was. And it's so beautiful. I wasn't uncomfortable at all doing it."
A recent report in Parents Magazine reflects the rising interest, suggesting more than half of all women today would be interested in taking professional pregnant photos. That compares with only 10 percent of women who considered it back in 1991, when a pregnant Demi Moore graced the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.
"We have all fun things to do with the pregnant women and their interesting beautiful shapes," explained Berg, who believes the growing popularity of maternity photography reflects the growing number of more "mature" parents.
"A lot of times it's the dads who say 'Honey, please get some pictures. You're so beautiful.' I think we're more thoughtful as older parents," Berg continued. "We treasure those moments a tiny bit more."
Haley says she is thrilled with her photos, mainly because Berg captured what is most beautiful to her: the beginning of her son's life story.
"It really just captures Andrew inside of me and how I feel with him inside of me. And I'm looking forward to meeting him."
