Massive Brush Fires Burn In North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Chopper 11 flew over the scene of a 400-acre brush fire in Palo Pinto County Monday afternoon.
As of 8:40 p.m. five-percent of it was contained.
Earlier in the afternoon, winds whipped flames as helicopters flying overhead dumped water on the fire.
Small planes were seen dumping bright red fire retardant from above, the powdery concoction slowly falling onto flames.
On the ground, the scene was just as hectic with large truck hauling heavy equipment, including bulldozers to help battle the blaze.
Authorities haven't determined what sparked the fire but windy, dry conditions didn't help.
At one point, the inferno threatened 12 nearby homes.
Fire fighters were able to beat back the threat and so far there have been no evacuations.
Multiple fire departments and Texas A&M Forest Service are working the wildfire.
Meantime, in Granbury, not far from the airport, a wildfire destroyed a vacant farm house.
This fire burned 202 acres.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and ambulance was called for treatment.
