Mass Layoffs At North Texas Whole Foods Production Location

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Austin-based Whole Foods Market Inc. has announced there will be mass layoffs at a Dallas production location.

In a 'WARN Notice' letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission on January 2 the company said it will close the Dallas Bakehouse facility on March 11.

Currently the bakehouse produces baked goods for eight Dallas-area Whole Foods retail locations, as well as stores in two other states.

While the layoffs at the East University facility are expected to be permanent the company said all North Texas retail locations will continue to receive their usual selection of baked goods everyday.

The notice said each affected employee, some 70 people, were hand delivered a notice on January 4.

In an e-mail sent to CBSDFW.COM and CBS 11 News a Whole Foods marketing employee said more than a dozen bakehouse employees have already found positions at Whole Foods Market locations.

In November, Whole Foods reported 12-week fourth quarter sales increased 12-percent to $2.4 billion. Despite the increase, the company's outlook for profits in 2012 missed expectations.
