Marcus Wins Second Straight State Title

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - Senior guard Phil Forte scored 24 points as Flower Mound Marcus rallied from a 7-point second half deficit to defeat Fort Bend Travis 56-52 Saturday night in Austin for its second straight Class 5A boys basketball state championship.

Forte earned tournament MVP honors, going 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 8-for-8 from the free throw line. His fellow Oklahoma State signee, McDonald's All-American Marcus Smart, added 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Future New Mexico Lobo Nick Banyard provided an inside presence for the Marauders, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, as Marcus survived a 23-point performance by Andrew Harrison, the top-ranked junior in Texas.

Marcus is the first Class 5A school in Texas to win back-to-back state titles and play in three straight state tournaments.
