Man Who Shot Fort Worth Police Officer Sentenced
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Joe Nathan Haywood III was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for the July 2011 shooting of a Fort Worth Police officer.
Monday, before the jury was seated for the trial, Haywood pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on a public servant. The trial moved directly to the punishment phase after which the jury deliberated for 30 minutes before sentencing Haywood.
Fort Worth Officer Cliff Hankins was working a suspicious person call in the 1100 block of East Berry street on the afternoon of July 7, 2011 when he was shot by Haywood in the lower back. Hankins later recovered from the wound.
After the shooting, Haywood was apprehended in wooded area near the scene.
"We wanted this case tried to a jury to get an expression from the public about these critical incidents," said Tarrant County District Attorney Joe Shannon in a press release. "This sentence makes a loud and clear statement as to how the public feels about assaults on the men and women who risk their lives daily to protect the rest of us," Shannon said
In addition to the life sentence, the jury also fined Haywood $10,000.
