SAN MARCOS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Texas State University student is shaken up but physically alright after someone in a clown costume attacked her near campus on Monday.

"She was walking through the breezeway when she noticed a clown walking towards her," said Sgt. Rolando Belmares with the Texas State University police. "Even if it started as a prank, unfortunately now they've crossed that threshold and it's a criminal offense and we're investigating it as such."

Police at the San Marcos school said the clown chased the woman near her dorm, then grabbed her arm, but she ran away.

Now many other students have expressed concern about going outside after dark.

"It has changed the way that we do everything because we go to the library and gym at night… and now we don't," said college student Sloan Schoenewolf. "I think it's really threatening and it's a really scary thing because we don't feel safe going out at night anymore."

All the clown scares have forced MedStar to change up its annual safety clown program, which helps children with medical restrictions go trick-or-treating.

This year, MedStar said the program will continue, just without the clowns.
