Man Shot Trying To Rob Fort Worth Smoke Shop

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A man who attempted to rob a Fort Worth smoke shop and game room was shot and seriously injured early Thursday morning. The incident happened just before 3:00 a.m. at the Ramey Village Square shopping center, located in the 5400 block of Ramey Avenue in east Fort Worth.

According to authorities, the 21-year-old man was inside of the store playing casino amusement games when he decided to try robbing the place. He pulled out a weapon and approached the store clerk, demanding cash. The clerk handed over a bag of money, but the suspect struggled with a locked door while trying to leave. That provided an opportunity for a second store employee.

Terrance Sims was the clerk behind the counter. "The guy came while I was at the register and he had a gun, and said, 'Give me everything you got.' And so, by that time, I gave him the bag," recalled Sims. Then the robbery had trouble with the door. "I threw him the keys and he didn't know what key opened the door, and my co-worker came around the back."

The second employee heard a commotion and pulled out a gun, shooting the suspect three times -- in the knee, calf and head. The suspect was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. If he survives, police plan to charge the man with aggravated robbery.

There were about five or six people inside of the store at the time of the shooting. The store is open around the clock. "Most of the folks that come in here, they come in here and play for a dollar," Sims said. He added that the suspect never appeared suspicious. "He had a dollar in his hand and I let him in."

A second person who was in the store received a minor injury when a piece of equipment fell during the shooting. And the store employee who shot the suspect will not face any charges.
