Man Shot After 2 Intruders Break Into Plano Home

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - A man is in the hospital with a gunshot wound after a home invasion in Plano. The incident was first reported at around 2:00 a.m. early Thursday near the intersection of Briar Ridge Lane and Woodland Creek Drive, in the far western part of the city.
Authorities stated that a woman inside of the residence called 911 saying that her husband was shot by a pair of intruders who forced their way into the couple's home wearing camouflage bandanas. The suspects purposely woke up the couple to demand valuables.
"There was a fight that ensued when the male homeowner resisted, and there was at least one shot that was fired by one of the suspects," explained Det. Jerry Minton.
The victim was struck in the abdomen area and taken to Medical Center of Plano in serious condition. Police have said that he is now in stable condition and is expected to survive. He has been speaking with investigators at the hospital, but his name has not been released.
The suspects are still on the loose. They have been described as black males in their late 20s or early 30s, both about 6 feet tall with short hair and muscular body types. Officials are not sure if they had a getaway vehicle or fled from the scene on foot.
Crime scene detectives early Thursday morning combed over the scene looking for evidence, frequently going in and out of an opened garage door. The Plano Police Department's 'Crimes Against Persons' unit was also called to the scene. Police have not yet said what the possible motive for the shooting might have been, or how they got into the home.
Several neighborhood roads around the Plano home were blocked off while investigators were at the scene. Authorities added that a home invasion is pretty unusual for this part of the city. Meanwhile, neighbor Keller McCrary is haunted by the actions that he did not take. "I'm so mad that I didn't do anything," he said.
McCrary was coming home late from work at around 1:30 a.m. when he noticed a couple of suspicious people walking through the neighborhood. But he did not report it. The home invasion and shooting happened shortly after, just a few doors down the street. McCrary is sure that the suspects were the same two people that he saw. "I'll be thinking about this all day," he added.
"You start thinking," McCrary said, "had I done something, could I have maybe saved a guy from getting shot?"
McCrary has spoken to officers, even about the possibility of surveillance video. "I've got cameras on my house, so I'm going to review mine here shortly and, if I see something, I'll turn it over to them," he stated.
But the next time that he sees something suspicious, McCrary has vowed to speak up right away. He is urging the community to do the same. "You need to be real vigilant," McCrary said, "because it is a different world we live in."
