Man Set To Die For Corsicana Carjack Slaying
HUNTSVILLE (AP) - The U.S. Supreme Court is considering appeals from a North Texas man set to die for the carjack-slaying of a 17-year-old a dozen years ago.
Ronnie Threadgill faced lethal injection Tuesday evening in Huntsville for fatally shooting Dexter McDonald near Corsicana, about 60 miles south of Dallas.
An attorney for the 40-year-old Threadgill argued to justices that he had deficient legal help at his trial in 2002 and in earlier appeals of his case. State lawyers contended the appeal was merely an attempt to delay Threadgill's punishment.
Threadgill already had a long criminal record when he led officers in April 2001 on a chase down Interstate-45 through Navarro County. After wrecking, he ran off on foot and was found at a truck stop, hiding under a semitrailer.
