FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -- A jury sentenced a 31-year-old man to 14 years in prison Thursday for fatally stabbing a neighbor who had an affair with his wife.
Luis Miguel Hernandez was convicted of murdering 18-year-old Devin Toler in June 2013. He must serve half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
During the summer of 2013, Toler lived directly above the Hernandez family in an apartment in the 6200 block of Watermark Court. During that time, prosecutors say Toler had an affair with Hernandez's wife.
The tension between the two became violent on June 20, 2013. As Toler was playing with his ex-girlfriend and their 19-month-old daughter on the complex's basketball court, the two began exchanging words. Prosecutors say Hernandez shouted racial slurs and called Toler's daughter a "b---".
The men engaged in a fistfight, during which Hernandez stabbed Toler once in the heart with a butter knife. Toler later died at an area hospital.
Hernandez claimed self defense, though jurors ultimately rejected the claim.
"You don't get to provoke a fistfight, stab someone with a knife and then claim self-defense," said Assistant Criminal District Attorney Tasha Foster. "Devin had an affair with the defendant's wife, but he didn't deserve to die for it."
