Man Killed In Shootout With Ponder Officer

PONDER (CBSDFW.COM) -  A Ponder police officer responding to reported gun shots around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, ended up in a shootout with a suspect.

It happened in a neighborhood in the 600 block of Robinson Road.

The officer reports he was in a private driveway when a man approached him with a gun in his hand.

According to the preliminary investigation, the officer identified himself and ordered the man to drop the gun, but the suspect allegedly fired at the police officer.

The officer returned fire and the suspect died at the scene.

The suspect's name has not been released pending notification of family.

The officer is currently on paid administrative leave.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident at the request of the Ponder Police Department.
