Man Jumps From Balcony To Escape Arlington Apartment Fire

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- An Arlington man jumped from his second story balcony on Monday morning to escape a two-alarm fire.

Anthony Hernandez, a resident of the Silverwood Apartments, says a smoke alarm woke him up.

"I was asleep and it sounded like someone was banging on my door and so I got up and came in the living room and I could see smoke and fire coming through the door," said Hernandez. "So I threw on some clothes. I had to jump from the balcony because there was fire right here."

Hernandez did hurt his arm in the fall, though the injury is not serious. He was transported to the emergency room by ambulance, but has since returned to the scene.

Because of the intensity of the fire, a firefighter suffered second degree burns. He was treated at the scene and released.

Grand Prairie police officers initially spotted the fire, called it in, and helped some resident evacuate the building.

Authorities are still investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
