Man In Custody After Kidnapping In Arlington
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - One man is in custody after a carjacking and kidnapping in north Arlington. The incident started at about 5:00 p.m. on Thursday when, police said, a woman was carjacked while leaving a Walmart store along Randol Mill Road.
The woman is a store employee who was just ending her work shift.
According to authorities, she was able to call 911 about an hour after the carjacking, but could not give police any clues as to where she was located.
"Anytime we have a situation where someone's taken against their will, we believe that that's occurred, we put a lot of resources into motion," said Sgt. Christopher Cook with the Arlington Police Department.
Then, just after 2:00 a.m. early Friday morning, police found the victim's vehicle along the 1100 block of Center Street in Arlington. A police officer was able to her out of the car and a perimeter was set up around the suspect's apartment.
After a short standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. He has been identified as 38-year-old Jeff Womack. CBS 11 News has exclusive video of Womack exiting his home under police instruction. Other people inside of the apartment were detained, but not arrested.
The kidnapped woman told authorities that she does not know the suspect. Womack now faces a charge of aggravated kidnapping and three charges of aggravated sexual assault, with more charges possible as the investigation continues. His bail has been set at just over $400,000.
The victim was taken to Arlington Memorial Hospital for treatment, but the nature of her injuries is not known.
