Man Gets 50 Years Jail For Killing Store Clerk
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A 37-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in prison for killing a clerk during a robbery at a Fort Worth convenience store last year. Wendell Halkmon pled guilty to murdering 44-year-old Ehab Shiber in an agreement made with Tarrant County prosecutors.
The slaying took place in April 2012, when an armed and masked man entered the Village Food Store, located in the 800 block of East 15th Street in Fort Worth. The store's surveillance camera captured the crime. Shiber was shot multiple times. No money was taken from the store's cash register, but Halkmon took cash and cigarettes from the victim's pockets.
A customer walked into the store during the incident, and ran to get help from another nearby store owner. Tips led police to a gas station dumpster at the intersection of Lancaster Street and Henderson Street. There, investigators recovered pieces of clothing and a latex glove used in the robbery and murder.
DNA tests then linked those clothing items to Halkmon. "Thanks to good old-fashioned police work and modern-day DNA technology, the mask the defendant wore to hide his crime actually ended up revealing his identity," said prosecutor Christy Jack.
