Man Gets 50 Years For Killing Ex-Girlfriend's Mom
TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - A judge sentenced a North Texas man to 50 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend's mother.
Prosecutors presented evidence that the ex-girlfriend of Luis Alfredo Perez filed a protective order against him in 2011. In July of that year Perez contacted the woman, who was the mother of his two young children, claiming to want to see the kids. The woman refused.
Perez ignored the refusal and went to the apartment anyway, but left when no one answered the door. Undeterred Perez returned to the apartment that afternoon. This time his ex-girlfriend's mother, Maria Ramirez, answered the door and went outside to talk to him.
Perez and Ramirez began arguing and at some point the 24-year-old man pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waist and shot Ramirez in the abdomen. The woman was taken tot the hospital where she later died.
Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Tasha Foster spoke about the sentence and what it meant to Perez' ex-girlfriend. "This was an abusive relationship that culminated in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend's mother," she said. "The defendant gave her grief and heartbreak; the judge gave her justice."
Perez, who had previous convictions for driving while intoxicated and criminal trespass, will have to serve 25 years before he is eligible for parole.
