Man Gets 2 Years For Shooting Dog With Crossbow
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -- A Fort Worth man was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for severely injuring a dog by shooting it with a crossbow.
Christopher Swilley, 49, received the maximum sentence allowed after a jury convicted him of animal cruelty.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Swilley shot a black and white Husky with a crossbow on April 11, 2012 as the dog was lying down. The arrow pierced the dog's chest and leg.
"This was unfathomable to do this to an animal for absolutely no reason," said Assistant District Attorney Dawn Ferguson. "We are glad the jury stuck up for this stray dog and that he now has a happy, healthy life."
Swilley fled the scene following the shooting. The injured dog ran to the yard of a neighbor, who called police.
The Humane Society of North Texas rescued the dog, who underwent emergency surgery for its injuries.
The dog recovered and was adopted two weeks later. The adoptive family named him "Dantes".
Dantes is happy and healthy, but still favors one side of his body.
