Neighbors Try To Save Worth Man From Fire
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters found a man dead inside his south Fort Worth home Friday afternoon, after a fire and reports of explosions from the house. Investigators said there wasn't any immediate sign of what caused the fire or the explosions people reported hearing.
Several children in the neighborhood said they first noticed smoke coming from the house on the 1200 block of E. Baltimore St.
John Tate spoke to the homeowner on the phone a few hours before the fire. Tate said people started running toward the home to try to help.
"One of the guys broke the window out," according to Tate. "Once I saw the smoke was just black, real dark black smoke, that's when I knew it was out of our hands."
That was also the moment when people described hearing two large booms from the home. Fort Worth fire department battalion chief Richard Harrison said investigators were still trying to determine what people heard.
Crews from Atmos Energy were probing the ground and rooftops on neighboring homes Friday night. Harrison said it was out of precaution, even though many residents said homes in the area don't use gas.
The man's daughter was seen, overcome with emotion as she looked at her father's burned home, now empty... still standing on Baltimore Street.
