Man Dies After Getting Compacted In Trash Truck
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A man thought to be in his mid-40s was killed on Wednesday morning after getting crushed inside a trash truck.
Fort Worth Police, Fort Worth Fire and MedStar EMS were called to a business off Lancaster Avenue near Hughes Avenue on the city's southeast side just after 6:30 a.m.
According to Matt Zavadsky, a spokesman for MedStar EMS Service, the man was inside a dumpster when a trash truck came to take away the garbage.
The trash truck began to compact the trash, and the man started to scream for help, alerting the trash truck service that he was there.
By the time the truck driver was able to stop the compacter and crews were able to get the man out, he was in full cardiac arrest, Zavadsky said. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in critical condition before passing.
MedStar estimates the man to be about 45-years-old.
The company that owns the trash truck, Progressive Waste Solutions, describes the accident as "unfortunate" and is investigating.
It's not known why the man was in the dumpster, but officials have said in the past that homeless people will often use dumpsters as places to sleep and stay warm. The low temperature this morning in Fort Worth was 26 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
