DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A driver was killed and his passenger was injured late Thursday night in a violent crash which may have started as a street race. The incident happened at about 11:15 p.m. along northbound Stemmons Freeway at the exit ramp onto Northwest Highway.
A deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office spotted at least a couple of cars involved in what looked like a street race. But when the deputy tried to stop a white Chevrolet Camaro, the driver started speeding away from the scene. The deputy pursued him for just a short amount of time.
That driver was traveling at around 100 mph when he took the Northwest Highway exit ramp and lost control of his vehicle at a big curve in the road. The car flew onto a nearby patch of grass, slammed into a power pole and caught on fire. Pieces of that wrecked vehicle are still at the scene.
The man behind the wheel was pronounced dead. A woman inside of the car was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, but her current condition is not known. Neither individual has been identified.
There was not a child in the car, however, emergency responders found several children's items scattered among the debris at the scene -- including a a stroller, toys and small shoes.
