Man Arrested After 45-Mile Police Chase
CORSICANA (CBSDFW.COM) - A man driving a stolen Mercedes was arrested in Corsicana after leading police on a chase through three North Texas counties. The incident started at about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night, when authorities detected a LoJack signal coming from the stolen car, then located near the intersection of Corinth Street Road and East 8th Street in Dallas.
Police discovered the stolen Mercedes in the 7500 block of the Julius Schepps Freeway. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Instead, that driver fled from authorities at a high rate of speed, leading officers on a 45-mile chase through Dallas County, Ellis County and Navarro County.
Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety assisted in the pursuit, and eventually deployed spike strips in Corsicana. The vehicle hit those spike strips and crashed. The suspect -- later identified as 27-year-old Christopher Darnell Shields -- then exited the Mercedes and ran away on foot into a nearby wooded area.
The Dallas Police Department helicopter and canine units were brought to the scene to help officers locate the suspect. Shields was eventually found hiding in the brush. Authorities recovered a handgun while taking Shields into custody. He was charged with evading arrest and aggravated robbery.
According to police, the Mercedes had been stolen earlier on Tuesday evening, during a robbery in the 1600 block of Meadow Valley Lane in Dallas. The victim in that incident was shot as the vehicle was taken. Authorities said that the handgun found on Shields is the same gun used in this earlier shooting.
