Lt. Gov David Dewhurst Discusses Controversial Phone Call

ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - Lt. Gov David Dewhurst spoke to the media Saturday for the first time since his controversial phone call to the Allen Police Department a week ago.

He called police and asked to speak to the senior officer working after learning of a relative's arrest for shoplifting.

Allen police say Dewhurst didn't receive any special treatment and his call didn't cross any lines.

A spokesman for the Lt. Governor said he was simply trying to help a family member in need and didn't ask for any favors. Critics however, have expressed disdain, saying it shows poor judgement. Dewhurst today addressed his critics.

"I kept visualizing this lady who I have known for a long time, alone, I pictured my mom who is a single mom if that ever happened to her and I was concerned I was a very concerned uncle I made it crystal clear I didn't expect any other treatment."

Dewhurst's niece, Ellen Bevers, was arraigned on shoplifting charges. Her attorney told CBSDFW.COM she simply forgot to scan the $57 worth of items at a grocery store self check-out.
