DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A familiar face in firehouses across the city of Dallas will now be a mainstay.

Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm has officially named Louis Bright III as Chief of Dallas Fire Rescue.

"I was here at work this morning and received the word that the decision was made to make me the permanent chief," Bright said Friday. "I'm obviously very excited, humble number one and very excited to take on this challenge in the city I grew up in."

Bright had held the title of Interim Dallas Fire Chief for nine months, as he filled in for former chief Eddie Burns who resigned amid a number of sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits.

Bright had not formally applied for the job and Suhm had previously stated he was not a candidate for the position.

The new city leader said he believes his recent job performance made a difference in him receiving the promotion.

"In nine months, with the help of all the members of this department, I believe we have done some things that are moving us in a positive direction," Bright said.

Bright, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Fire Management, said his first challenge will be dealing with the upcoming budget.
