VAN(CBSDFW.COM) - When Mother Nature is at its worse, often humanity is at its best.
"We all care in this town," said Van resident Mindy Vickory.
Sifting through what was their neighbor's home, Vickory along with other Van High School students searched for anything they could salvage.
"We are trying to collect everything that is valuable to them," said Hannah Stanley.
The teenagers found household items and even jewelry, but perhaps nothing they found was as valuable as the pictures. In a storm that tore apart large thick tress, it can be hard to explain how a thin picture would barely be creased.
Volunteers on Tuesday have found dozens of old pictures, baby pictures, important documents, along with a hand written letter from a Vietnam soldier to his parents – dated 1967.
The American Red Cross set up a lost and found for these pictures.
Elizabeth Elliott knows what it's like to find what she thought surly had been destroyed in the tornado. "It's not soggy or nothing," she said after pulling her family's photo album out from a pile that was her parent's home.
Finding her family's picture album, Elliott said, doesn't make rebuilding her parents' home easier.
But, she said, rebuilding is possible while sometimes replacing is not.
